#Repost @timber.no ・・・ 2017 - portrait of Arden - top ten ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My final top ten image for 2017.. I hope you all have enjoyed them! When I took this photo in February I knew it would be one of my favorites of the year. Everything about this image is exactly what I normally don’t do.. shooting in bright sunlight, using harsh shadows, bold colors, no pointe shoes... and I love it. I love the reflected light on her skin, the angle of her face turning away, her red skirt blowing in the tropical breeze. 70 miles from Key West and 90 from Cuba this image blurs the line of ballet and fashion. It is portraiture, ballet, fashion, art.. Arden is creative and so much fun to work with. From shopping for wardrobe, to planning insanely perfect locations.. From Midwestern small towns, to Manhattan studios, to Key West sunsets.. where will it be next? Over the last year and a half she has continually inspired my art. To go big on my shoots, to make things happen, to be creative.. Thank you Arden and Jennifer for being such amazing people. You truly are a blessing. 🐓🌴 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *For my top ten this year there is no order. I have far too many images that I love. Choosing a number one would be an impossible task. This year I have decided to look through my images and choose ten that make me love what I do. Ten images that remind me how blessed I am to photograph the amazing people I create art with. Ten images that move and inspire me. Images that I wouldn’t change a thing about. Moments I relive in my head, light I strive to replicate.. Many of these images are very simple. I love them for all of the little details. I believe they are perfect examples of the style and beauty I try to create with ballet and portraiture. I hope you enjoy them as well. 🙏🏼 #dancephotography

Choreographed by @edwaardliang , this death jump is quite crazy because she takes off several feet away from me. She must get enough momentum to not only reach me but also to do so at the correct height so my hands catch her all the while launching herself backward like a professional highjumper. Over the course of time, Victoria was able to execute the craziest leaps taken farther and farther away from me. She always had full trust that I would be there catching her. One anecdote: She took off so far that I almost did not make the goal. I caught her 2 inches off the floor. The audience loved it and scream while my heart stopped for a few seconds. It was the Gala of the XXI Century in Paris, France. Thats what 18 years of partnership does to you! #truestory #trust #confidence
#Repost @stephenpetronio ・・・ NYTimes Dance Critic @alastair.macaulay said beautiful words about the company ・・・ Nicholas Sciscione and Melissa Toogood in Merce Cunningham’s “RainForest” as danced in 2016 by the Stephen Petronio Dance Company in its Bloodlines project, tracing the choreographic forerunners to whom Petronio is indebted. “RainForest” (1968) is famous for its decor of Andy Warhol helium-filled silver pillows and its strange, changing, feral intensity; I saw it many times with the Cunningham company between 1988 and 2011. On Tuesday evening, the Dance on Camera Festival gave the premiere of “If the Dancer Dances”, a new 100-minute film by Maia Wechsler and Lise Friedman about the process whereby Cunningham alumni taught “RainForest” to Petronio’s company. By focusing on the difficulties and challenges of this gestation period - interlaced with views of New York itself, a city in continual change - this film makes both Cunningham’s and Petronio’s styles remarkably vivid. The leading Petronio dancer Gino Grenek, learning Cunningham’s own role without ever feeling at home in it, emerges with an exceptional nobility (he has such quiet authority that you see why Petronio was right to insist on casting him) and Petronio, so warm in his welcoming of Cunningham outsiders and in his encouragement of his own dancers to embrace alien stimuli, is the other hero of the movie. Toogood, a brilliant Cunningham dancer of his final years who joined the Petronio troupe for this season, speaks of Cunningham with memorable emotion; Davalois Fearon goes through a process similar to Grenek’s, finding it hard to find herself in Cunningham. Members of the original “RainForest” cast - Albert Reid, Gus Solomons Jr. - speak vividly; Cunningham alumni involved in the staging - Meg Harper, Andrea Weber (who allows herself to be seen as almost comically over-perfectionist and anxious), Rashaun Mitchell - are vivid contributors. Our fear of going deeper into ourselves stems from what we might pull out; it is easier not to know. ☔ I've often been accused of being reckless. If there is a path, I will surely deviate. If I can dream up a business idea, I do it despite consequences because I know that the best businesses run on dreams. If I want to create in any way that feels authentic, I do it despite the consequences because I know that art runs on dreams. Life runs on dreams. If we always push them away they will stop coming. What develops instead of dreams is an umbrella of protection. We forget what it feels like to get ourselves dirty. ☔ We forget that Risk is both Danger and Opportunity. ☔ Remember to be bold today. Be so bold you catch lightning in your spine.

On Gaga, Graham and the brain #Repost @swannotes The eerie whimsy right before @batshevadancecompany Young Ensemble took the stage @thejoycetheater last night for “Naharin’s Virus”. My first time seeing the language of Gaga and I was struck at how much it reminded me of my research years when I used to ghostwrite for a senior psychologist @psych_today. As Batsheva dancers move, they evoke the mysterious landscape of the brain as part of the nervous system—from nerve synapses and neurotransmitters to behaviors we are born with (versus behaviors we learn). Just as @marthagrahamdance explores the invisible realm of archetypes with such vivid command, @batshevadancecompany ‘s domain is complete mastery of the brain in all its reflexive splendor. A #tanaquilleclercq legacy #Repost @alastair.macaulay Last year, I was a Jerome Robbins Research Fellow of the New York Public Library, researching Robbins’s “Faun” and its connections to Nijinsky’s “Faune”. After I presented about this in January 2018 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium, I assumed my assignment was complete. This week, however, I’ve been approached about possible publication of my presentation (we’ll see). And then this afternoon I came home to find that the Dance Division has sent me this - framed, too: a photograph by Robbins himself of Tanaquil Le Clercq in Robbins’s “Afternoon of a Faun”, a role he conceived and made for her. Her father was a French literature scholar who corresponded with Robbins about the original Mallarmé poem, which has two nymphs: Mr Le Clercq felt Robbins’s ballet joined the two in one. At the Robbins “Faun” seminar, several Robbins dancers spoke of the singular generation he had for Tanaquil: he would have liked her in every ballet he made, they said, and he would have trusted her with whatever changes she might have made to any work of his. When you consider that, before polio curtailed her career at age twenty-six, she created roles for George Balanchine (at least six), Robbins (two), and Frederick Ashton (one) that still endure in repertory today as well as others for Merce Cunningham, Todd Bolender, Ruthanna Boris, and Balanchine, it’s hard not to feel she was both muse and catalyst. My hearty thanks to the Dance Division of the New York Public Library: its staff are my friends as well as my colleagues, but this gift was more than I had ever expected. Saturday 21 July.
